Chris Rock was born Christopher Julius Rock on February 7, 1965 in Andres, South Carolina. His parents soon moved to Crown Heights in Brooklyn, and a few years later to Bedford-Stuyvesant. His mother worked as a teacher for the mentally handicapped, and his father worked as a newspaper deliveryman and truck driver.
His older brother Charles had died in 2006 after a struggle with alcoholism. Chris often stated that he got his inspiration for performances from his grandfather Allen Rock who was a preacher. His family came from a generation of slaves and American Civil War fighters.
As a child, rock studied in white neighborhoods in Brooklyn and as a result was often bullied and beaten up by them.
