Mulaney wanted to enter the show business from an early age, and he joined a children’s sketch club called The Rugrats when he was seven. Thanks to the club, John auditioned as Kevin in the Home Alone films, but his parents refused it.

During middle school, he performed the role of Wally Webb in Our Town at his school and practiced acting during this time. Soon after, he went to Georgetown University and graduated with a major in English and a minor in Theology.

During his time at Georgetown, John joined an improv group and met Nick Kroll and Mike Birbiglia. Soon after, when Birbiglia started his standup tour, Mike joined him.

Mulaney soon moved to New York to start his comedy career and hired Comedy Central as an office assistant. Here he pitched the idea for an I Love the 30’s and wrote it with Nick Kroll. However, he soon quit comedy central to improve his craft further.
